How Small Businesses Are Winning With AI, Content, and Cybersecurity in 2025

How Small Businesses Are Winning in 2025? The digital transformation of small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) is no longer just underway — it’s accelerating. According to Verizon Business’s 2025 State of Small Business Survey, conducted by Morning Consult, SMBs across the U.S. are rapidly embracing technology as a core strategy for growth, marketing, and operational resilience.

One key driver? AI and content tools are now widely accessible, allowing smaller companies to compete on a level once reserved for enterprise players. From automating customer interactions to scaling content creation on platforms like TikTok, SMBs are rewriting the rulebook on digital business.

“Small business owners are entering a new chapter of digital business with the rise of AI,” said Aparna Khurjekar, Chief Revenue Officer at Verizon Business. “At Verizon, we are committed to helping them navigate new technologies that deliver growth and protect against cyber threats.”

Key Tech Trends Shaping SMB Strategy in 2025

Tech Upgrades Are the New Normal

47% of SMBs have adopted new digital platforms over the past year — primarily to boost cybersecurity and streamline digital operations.

Content creation is becoming essential, with over 60% of decision-makers increasing their investment or launching initiatives to engage customers online.

AI Goes Mainstream in SMB Operations

38% of SMBs are already using AI across various functions.

28% use AI for social media and marketing.

24% apply it to automate written communication.

25% rely on AI-driven digital assistants for customer service.

Another 25% are using AI to strengthen their cybersecurity posture.

SMBs are also testing AI’s potential in workforce management:

56% believe AI can help address labor shortages or hiring freezes.

53% think AI will improve staff retention.

19% are already applying it to recruitment and sourcing.

Cybersecurity Is a Growing Priority

52% of SMBs recognize that growth comes with increased cyber risk.

Nearly half made cybersecurity investments in the last year, but 25% still feel underprepared.

Social Media: Still the MVP for SMB Growth

Platforms like Facebook remain foundational, but TikTok is rising fast: 58% of SMBs are active on the short-form video platform.

76% of businesses report that social media has a positive impact on their brand and customer engagement.

What It Means for the Future

This year’s report makes one thing clear: Technology is no longer optional for small businesses — it’s existential. AI, automation, and content are proving to be key competitive differentiators, not only for customer acquisition but also for employee efficiency and security resilience.

The 2025 State of Small Business Survey reflects a shift in mindset — SMBs are no longer playing catch-up. They’re building smarter, faster, and more adaptable businesses from the ground up.
